Texas is an exceptional place for anglers and hunters, but you’ll need to be licensed before heading out. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) can help you learn what’s required in order to buy a license online or from a retailer near you.

All residents and visitors over the age of 17 require a Texas fishing license to reel in fish, mussels, clams, and crayfish across the state. In addition, you’ll need specific tags or endorsements based on the size of the catch and its location.

All residents and visitors need a Texas hunting license to take part in hunting or trapping across the state. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department bases licenses, stamps, and permits on the type of game you’re hunting, your age, and where you live.

You’ll need different materials to get your license depending on your resident status and which license you’re getting. For both fishing and hunting licenses, you need to:

Hunters will also need to complete a hunter education course.

Most fishing and hunting licenses are good for one year. Typically, they go on sale mid-August and are valid until August 31 the next year. For certain cases, lifetime licenses are available.

Texas residents can buy discounted, combination packages for fishing and hunting licenses. There are also special packages  for seniors, disabled veterans, and active-duty military.
